Shopify migrations

Scope the migration before you commit to a delivery quote. I deliver the smaller ones; the larger ones I scope and review.

Where I help

Migrations are the slice of work where I most often deliver end-to-end — the cost of a missed handoff is high enough that the same hands should hold scoping and cutover. For larger or more complex migrations I scope and advise; the build agency or your team executes against the document.

You probably want a Plus-Fit Assessment first if any of these are true:

  • The agency quote you’re holding doesn’t break out data fidelity, delta cutover, or redirect handling as separate line items.
  • The legacy catalogue has >100k records or non-trivial B2B price lists, customer history, or metafields that nobody has scoped properly.
  • The brief assumes a frozen catalogue during cutover — and you can’t actually afford that.

What the Plus-Fit gives you for a migration

  • Source-system audit — record counts, data-quality flags, the entities nobody has thought to migrate yet.
  • Mapping decisions, written down — product vs metaobject, variant vs related product, where metafields belong.
  • Cutover plan — delta strategy, downtime budget, rollback criteria.
  • Phased outline with a budget tier you can sanity-check agency quotes against — not a finished proposal, but the spine your team takes into the scope document.

What “delivered” looks like

See High-volume migration scoping for a 250k-SKU advisory engagement, and Plus-fit scoping ahead of an agency quote for the pre-quote advisory shape.
